Top animal hospital
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
Dennis C. Law of the West Jordan (Utah) 51st Ward and Steven D. Timothy of Holladay (Utah) 27th Ward joined their veterinary practices and designed their "fantasy" animal hospital. It recently was named the "Hospital of the Year" by the professional trade publication, Veterinary Economics. The animal hospital became the first in Utah to be honored in the competition's 22-year history.
Wins prose title
BAKERSFIELD, CALIF.
Jennifer Reid, Mia Maid president in the Laurelglen Ward, Bakersfield California South Stake, won the California state championship in the original prose and poetry forensic competition, the first from her high school and the first freshman to ever win the award.
3 Bishop Robisons
OVERTON, NEV.
Bishop James L. Robison has become the third member of his family to be bishop of the Overton (Nev.) Ward during the past 60 years. His father, A. Ray Robison, headed the ward from 1973 to 1979, and his grandfather, Joseph B. Robison, was bishop from 1928 to 1939.
Wins music award
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
Bret A. Jackson, a senior at BYU, has been named the 1988 national winner in the brass category of the Music Teachers National Association-Wurlitzer collegiate Artist Competition. Jackson was featured in concert and received a $2,000 award at the recent national finals in Salt Lake City, Utah. He performed two movements from Concerto for Trumpet by J.N. Hummel.
National runner-up
BRIGHAM CITY, UTAH
Marva Jeanne Pedersen, Relief Society teacher in the Willard (Utah) 2nd Ward, won second place in a national contest for her play, "Care for America." The competition was sponsored by the National League of American Pen Women. Sister Pedersen placed in the category: short dramas suitable for church and school presentations. The play, which honors the constitution, has been performed at Box Elder and Weber high schools.
Earns world honor
IRVING TEXAS
George A. Nail, a counselor in the elders quorum presidency of the Irving (Texas) 1st Ward and a second-year student at the Baylor College of Dentistry, won the coveted Hatton Award, the most prestigious dental student research award in the world. Nail first won the American Association of Dental Research Competition and then captured the international, Edward H. Hatton award. The results of his research were published in The Journal of Physical Anthropology and The Journal of American Dental Research.
Multiple missionaries
A family from Logan, Utah, has four children serving missions. Other families from the Philippines, New Mexico and Oregon have three children in the mission field.
- Ray and Janis L. Morris of the Logan (Utah) 21st Ward have daughters Elizabeth in Chile Osorno and Kathy in Dominican Republic Santo Domingo, and sons David in Hong Kong Kowloon and Daniel in Argentina Salta missions.
- Pres. Wilfredo Gray, a counselor in the Philippines Baguio Stake and his wife, Leonora, have sons Wilfredo, Jr. and Bernardo serrving in the Philippines Quezon City Mission, and daughter Elena in the Philippines Cebu East Mission.
- Don and Euleta Merrill of the Las Cruces (N.M.) 2nd Ward have sons Steven in the Japan Tokyo South and Roger in the Chile Santiago South, and daughter Eileen in the Argentina Rosario missions.
- Edwin and Marjorie Seely of the Milwaukie (Ore.) Ward, have sons Scott in the Spain Seville and Matthew in the Argentina Buenos Aires South, and daughter Mary in the Peru Lima North missions.
'Young innovator'
MIDLAND, MICH.
Dr. Marc L. Mansfield of the Michigan Molecular Institute here has been awarded the $15,000 Initiatives in Research Award by the National Academy of Sciences during ceremonies in Washington, D.C. Mansfield of the Midland (Mich.) 2nd Ward is the eighth recipient of the award, established in 1980 by Bell Laboratories in honor of William O. Baker, to "recognized innovative young scientists and to encourage" beneficial research.
On task force
NEW YORK CITY, N.Y.
BYU Pres. Jeffrey R. Holland has been invited to serve on a new 16-member Inter-Religious Task Force made up of leading members of the Christian and Jewish communities. The task force recently met in New York City "to strengthen the ties between our two communities." John J. Phelan Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of the New York Stock Exchange, chairs the task force. Phelan invited Holland to serve "because of the breadth of experience you have had in your career and the central role you now play in American life."
Volunteer honored
KOKOMO, IND.
Andrea Adams of the Kokomo (Ind.) Ward was one of four national young leader volunteers honored during National Volunteer Week by U.S. President Ronald Reagan at the White House in Washington, D.C. In his speech, the President noted Andrea's efforts to help another high school student who had serious family problems and was sleeping on the streets. Andrea invited the girl to live with her family for two month so she could finish school.
Served 28 years
TOOELE, UTAH
Emerson Powell of the Tooele (Utah) 11th Ward was recently released as ward financial clerk after serving for 28 years. Only open heart surgery in 1984 kept him from his duties for any extended period of time. He had planned to serve 30 years but had to be released for health reasons. He has seen many changes along the way as records have gone from being kept by hand to being computerized. He said the key to success in a calling is to enjoy it and serve willingly.
Delivers lecture
TORONTO, ONTARIO
Bryant W. Rossiter, Laguna Niguel (Calif.) 4th Ward, was named the 57th recipient of the American Institute of Chemists Members and Fellows Lecture Award. On June 5, he delived the lecture, "Chemistry: In Search of Food and Peace" to the Third Chemical Congress on North America at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto. The honor is given to prominent chemists. Rossiter is president of Viratek, Inc., a company marketing a drug to combat AIDS, and vice president of ICN Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Heads Idaho board
REXBURG, IDAHO
Charles "Tiny" Grant, president of the Ricks College Third Stake and director of development for Ricks College, has been named president of the Idaho Board of Education. He was elected to a one-year term by other members of the board. Grant has served as president of the California Anaheim Mission. At Ricks, he has been athletic director, and head baseball and head football coach.
Top administrator
WOODLAND HILLS, CALIF.
Tony Rivas of the Woodland Hills (Calif.) Ward was named Administrator of the Year by the California Association of Education Office Employees. Rivas, assistant superintendent in the Los Angeles Unified School District, oversees elementary and junior high schools in the northern and eastern parts of the San Fernando Valley. He is the first Los Angeles district administrator to receive the award.
First-place vocalist
NASHVILLE, TENN.
Monte Lee Saxton of the Meridian (Idaho) 2nd Ward recently won first place in the MOR/Easy Listening Category of the Vacal Division in the 8th annual Music City Song Festival. He won the with a vocal performance of his original song, "L.A. Blues."
All-Canadian
ECHIULLE, ALBERTA
Robyn Ann Purnell of the Rimbey Branch, Red Deer Alberta Stake, has been named to the All-Canadian Women's Basketball team for 1988. A junior forward for Red Deer College, she has received several honors, including Red Deer College Female Athlete of the Year and Woman Athlete of the Month, selected by the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.
Personality of year
CARDIFF, WALES
Lisa Caroline Parry, Cardiff Wales Stake Young Women president, is the first woman from Cardiff to become Littlewoods National chain stores personality girl of the year. She will be Littlewoods' ambassador and, she says, an ambassador for the Church as she travels through the British Isles representing the department store chain. She received a gold watch and bracelet, clothes and modeling opportunities.
