- The Tabernacle Choir's "Music and the Spoken Word" broadcast established a spiritual tone for the Sunday morning session of conference. Most in the congregation were already in their seats when the session began. Many of them had braved intermittent rain showers while waiting several hours in line for an opportunity to sit inside the Tabernacle. Because of the rain, smaller than usual crowds congregated outside the Tabernacle, but Temple Square itself was alive with the color of spring blossoms and lush green grass.
During the session, President Gordon B. Hinckley, first counselor in the First Presidency, who conducted the session, announced that they had received word that some Latter-day Saints in Great Britain were receiving the conference clearly via satellite. Prayers for the session were offered by Elders H. Burke Peterson and Hans B. Ringger, both members of the First Quorum of the Seventy.
