Bruce L. Olsen has been named managing director of the Public Communications/Special Affairs Department of the Church, the First Presidency announced May 26. Olsen will oversee the Church's community and media relations efforts.
Currently director of corporate communications for Geneva Steel, Olsen, 50, will succeed Elder Richard P. Lindsay, who in April was called to serve in the Second Quorum of the Seventy.Previous to his current employment, Olsen had a 20-year career at BYU, where he held several positions, including assistant dean and registrar, associate professor of communications, and assistant to the president for university relations.
He traveled widely, managing tours of BYU performing groups worldwide.
Olsen is president of the Orem Utah Sunset Heights Stake, and served as president of the Massachusetts Boston Mission from 1982-85.
He and his wife, the former Christine Payne, are parents of four children.
