BYU basketball coach Ladell Andersen announced his retirement March 17 and was replaced three days later by long-time Cougar assistant coach Roger Reid.
Andersen coached six years at BYU, compiling a 114-71 record. His teams competed in three NCAA tournaments. The 1987-1988 squad was ranked as high as No.2 in the country. This year BYU finished 14-15."There was never any pressure put on me in any way at BYU," Andersen said at a March 17 press conference, in which he announced his decision to retire. "It was strictly a decision my wife and I and my family discussed and decided to do."
Reid, 41, has coached at BYU 11 years as an assistant to Frank Arnold and Andersen. Last year he was heavily recruited to join the UCLA basketball staff as an assistant coach under another LDS coach, Jim Harrick.
"I never wanted to be a doctor, I never wanted to be a baker, I wanted to be a basketball coach--the basketball coach at BYU," Reid said at a press conference March 20 where his selection was announced.
Reid played basketball and baseball in college and four years of minor league baseball before going into high school coaching. He compiled a prep coaching record of 110-50.
