Nearly 300,000 LDS Scouts were among the 4 million Scouts nationwide who gathered an estimated 100 million food items Nov. 18 in the annual Scouting for Food drive.

In Utah, 27,500 Scouts - most members of Church-sponsored units - collected more than 1.2 million food items for distribution via food banks throughout the state."It was a tremendous effort," praised Gary Adams, public relations director for the Great Salt Lake Council of Boy Scouts of America. "Last year in the Salt Lake area, we collected about 406,000 items, and this year that figure was close to 495,000 - an increase of about 20 percent. Just last week, local food banks used the last of their food collected from last year's drive in the Salt Lake Valley."

Food collections on the national level also were up at least 20 percent over last year, according to Bob Mills, chairman of Mormon Relationships for Boy Scouts of America.

"It was a great community effort in this area involving not only the Boy Scouts, but also different church groups and businesses," Adams said.
