Perhaps no Church leader has had the impact on promoting the Book of Mormon that President Ezra Taft Benson has had.

In his four years as president of the Church, he has frequently encouraged members to begin a daily study of the Book of Mormon, and to continue that practice for a lifetime. He also placed a call to "flood the earth with the Book of Mormon."Evidence that the members and missionaries are heeding his words comes with a burgeoning increase in the number of books that are printed each year. In 1980, some 1.3 million books were printed, and the book was available in 35 languages. In 1989, more than 3 million copies were printed at various presses throughout the world. The book, or selections of the book, have been translated into 97 languages, of which 81 are now available.

An example of the book's power to covert was illustrated in the life of Vicenzo Di Francesca, an Italian convert of the early 1900s who found the book without its cover or title page, and searched many years to find the book's origin. His experience was made into a movie, "How Rare a Possession the Book of Mormon," which was shown on the Church's satellite system Nov. 8, 1987.
