President Thomas S. Monson celebrated his 62nd birthday Aug. 21 by participating in four dedicatory sessions at the Portland Oregon Temple.

President Monson, second counselor in the First Presidency, attended the temple dedication with President Ezra Taft Benson and President Gordon B. Hinckley, first counselor in the First Presidency.After returning to Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Aug. 22, after the dedicatory sessions, President Monson celebrated his birthday with his family, according to L. Don LeFevre of Church Public Communications/Special Affairs.

President Monson has been in the First Presidency since Nov. 10, 1985, havingpreviously served 22 years in the Council of the Twelve. He was called as an apostle on Oct. 4, 1963, at age 36.

He was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Salt Lake City to G. Spencer and Gladys Condie Monson. He graduated cum laude from the University of Utah in business management, and received a master of business administration degree from BYU. He served in the Navy during World War II.

He and his wife, the former Frances Beverly Johnson, are parents of three children.
