The First Presidency has sent a letter to General Authorities, and regional, mission and local priesthood leaders regarding couples serving missions.
"We are pleased with the response of many worthy and faithful couples in the Church who in their later years are serving on a voluntary basis in various capacities. A substantial number are called as missionaries to assist in activating the less active, in fellowshipping new converts, and in sharing the gospel with non-members. Others are serving in the temples, in the Family History Department, and in other areas. As they serve the Lord they grow in love for His work while providing a much-appreciated contribution."Couples who are physically and financially able, who are no longer engaged in regular employment or have dependent children, may be encouraged to serve in a missionary capacity in one of the activities referred to above. While they should not be put under duress to go, it would be appropriate for stake presidents and bishops to give encouragement, pointing out to them the tremendous service they may give and the benefits to be derived therefrom.
"Please assure them of our love and interest."
The letter was signed by President Ezra Taft Benson and his counselors, President Gordon B. Hinckley, first counselor; and President Thomas S. Monson, second counselor.
