The Lord accomplishes His work through mankind, and He honors their free agency. Therefore, men's wickedness or righteousness impedes or accelerates the work, states the Church Educational System's Doctrine and Covenants student manual.

In Section 105, the Lord tells the saints what preparation will be necessary in order to properly establish Zion.1. The leaders need to be prepared (see vss. 9-10).

2. The saints must be taught more perfectly about what the Lord requires of them (see vs. 10).

3. Church members must gain experience (see vs. 10).

4. The saints must know their duty more perfectly (see vs. 10).

5. Members must be endowed with power from on high (see vs. 11).

6. The saints must be faithful, enduring in humility to the end (see vs. 12).

It was necessary for the early saints to learn about and obey celestial law, or the law of the gospel. It is also requisite for Church members today to do the same. In 1880 general conference, Elder Joseph F. Smith explained the importance of living the law:

"Those who profess to be Latter-day Saints must become aquainted with the laws of the celestial kingdom, must abide by them, must comply with the requirements of heaven and hearken to the word of the Lord, in order that Zion may be built up acceptably. . . .

"We have been called, and so far as we will be faithful we are chosen to do this work. But notwithstanding we have been called, if we do not prove faithful we will be rejected."
