Upon entering a board room in the Church Administration Building on Friday, Aug. 4, President Ezra Taft Benson did not find the usual agenda filled with business matters of the Church. Instead, he saw an assortment of cards, letters and banners, bouquets of flowers, and a festive cake.
President Benson was surprised and delighted at preparations for a reception honoring him on his 90th birthday. At the reception, President Benson and his wife, Sister Flora Benson, greeted General Authorities and their wives and a few other personnel who work closely with the First Presidency.President Gordon B. Hinckley and President Thomas S. Monson, the prophet's counselors in the First Presidency, and their wives were among those who attended the reception, shaking the prophet's hand and extending birthday greetings and well-wishes to him.
Earlier in the day, President and Sister Benson enjoyed a birthday get-together with family members who had gathered for the special occasion.
President Benson received hundreds of birthday wishes from members throughout the Church. Numerous ward and branch Primaries sent handmade cards and letters, photos and other expressions of love.
Because of the great number of cards and letters he received, President Benson is unable to respond to each personally. He asked that the Church News convey his appreciation and gratitude to all who took the time to write letters or send cards.
He expressed his love for members of the Church everywhere.
