A new Young Men general presidency and a new second counselor in the Sunday School general presidency were sustained in the Saturday afternoon session of conference.
The First Presidency announced that Elder Jack H. Goaslind will serve as Young Men general president, with Elder LeGrand R. Curtis as first counselor and Elder Robert K. Dellenbach as second counselor.The newly sustained Young Men general presidency succeeeds Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone, president; Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, first counselor; and Elder Monte J. Brough, second counselor.
Elder H. Verlan Andersen was called to serve as second counselor in the Sunday School general presidency, succeeding Elder Ted E. Brewerton.
Elder Andersen will serve with Elder Hugh W. Pinnock, president, and Elder Derek A. Cuthbert, first counselor.
Each of the four General Authorities released from Young Men and Sunday School assignments has received an area presidency assignment requiring him to live outside the United States. (See Church News, Oct. 6.)
Elder Goaslind, 62, has been a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy since September 1978 and has also served in the presidency of the quorum. He has had area presidency assignments in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Africa, New Zealand, the South Pacific, Asia and the Northwest. Currently, he is first counselor in the North America West Area presidency. A native of Salt Lake City, he has also served the Church as a bishop, stake president, regional representative and as mission president in Arizona.
Elder Curtis, 66, was called to the Second Quorum of the Seventy in March 1990, and is now second counselor in the North America Southeast Area presidency. A Salt Lake native, he has served as a bishop, stake president, stake patriarch, regional representative, mission president in Florida and counselor in the general presidency of the Aaronic Priesthood MIA (now called the Young Men organization).
Elder Dellenbach, 53, was also called to the Second Quorum of the Seventy in March 1990. He currently is second counselor in the North America Northeast Area presidency. A native of Clinton, Utah, he has served as a regional representative, bishop, stake president and as a mission president in Germany.
Elder Andersen, 75, a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy, was called to be a General Authority in April 1986. He has served in the Mexico/Central America Area and South America South Area presidencies. A native of Logan, Utah, he has also served as a missionary, patriarch, bishop, stake president's counselor and stake high councilor. Currently, he is serving as second counselor in the Utah Central Area presidency.
Elder Featherstone, 59, Young Men general president since November 1985, is now first counselor in the Philippines/Micronesia Area. He was sustained as a General Authority in April 1972, as a counselor in the Presiding Bishopric. In 1976 he was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy, and most recently was first counselor in the North America Northwest Area.
Elder Holland, 49, is now president of the United Kingdom/Ireland Area. He was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy in April 1989, and has served in the Sunday School general presidency and as second counselor in the North America Southeast Area presidency.
Elder Brough, 51, called to the Second Quorum of the Seventy Oct. 1, 1988, is now second counselor in the Asia Area presidency, and most recently was first counselor in the Utah Central Area presidency.
Elder Brewerton, 65, a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy since Sept. 30, 1978, was called to the Sunday School general presidency in October 1989, and was just released as first counselor in the North America West Area. He is now president of the Central America Area.
