As a single parent, I've benefited from my association with sisters in Relief Society. It has provided adult stimulation and friendship.
When I first became a single parent, I had an infant and a toddler. Currently they are nearly teenagers. My needs and wants have changed through the years. In the beginning, there were times when I needed to get away for a few hours. At the time, I had a Relief Society president who took the children several times. I also felt a need to be needed. She assigned me to be a visiting teacher and gave me other assignments.Several years ago I went through a particularly difficult time with my former husband. I had a wonderful visiting teacher, Shirley Shimming, who was always there for me. One day when the children had gone with their father, she listened to the promptings of the Spirit and stopped to talk. When the children returned, I was no longer upset and was able to look at the eternal picture rather than the day-to-day struggle.
Currently, I have another visiting teacher, Margot Butler, who has become a real friend. My most important needs right now are social. At least monthly she and I go someplace for lunch or dinner. We sit for a couple of hours and talk. Sometimes it's serious, sometimes it's fun.
Relief Society is for every woman in the Church. It is a place where each can increase her understanding of the gospel. Each sister has opportunities to serve and to be served. Each has something to give and something to gain.
