Church buildings escaped major damage when an earthquake rumbled through Southern California Feb. 28, breaking windows and emptying shelves.
No members of the Church were injured, and only a few Church buildings were slightly damaged.Measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, the quake caused damage estimated in the millions of dollars, and injured two people.
Pres. Gordon W. Woolf of the La Verne California Stake, the area where the quake appeared to be strongest, reported that in the stake's meetinghouses, there were a few cracks in the steeples, some damaged rock facings and broken light fixtures.
"We made it through with minimal building damage," he said.
Some 132 aftershocks have been registered following the quake, and children have felt increased trauma from the continued shaking, said Pres. Woolf. Lessons at school are occasionally interrupted by aftershocks, and teaching is difficult until the children settle down.
He said a majority of stake members have emergency kits in the event that they have to leave their homes.
Pres. Lynn Reeder, counselor in the Upland California Stake where the epicenter was located, said members in that stake were shaken but not injured, nor was any property damage reported.
