Leaders of the Arapahoe Colorado stake youth conference changed plans at the last minute to include a much-needed service project.
A tornado struck Limon, Colo., on June 6, destroying the main business district of the town and a trailer court with 40 trailers. Seventy-five youths and their leaders traveled early on the morning of Saturday, June 23, to the town 90 miles away and spent the morning helping the residents of the tornado-ravaged prairie town. The youth conference was planned as an in-stake conference, including a game day at a local park with a cook-out, a dance at a high-rise building and miniature golf. But the service project became the focal point that drew the youths together.
Three projects occupied their attention. Some youths loaded goods from a store into a trailer so the damaged building could be torn down. Others cleared debris from a field where the trailer court had been. A third group sorted donated clothing by size and quality, arranging it for easy access by the tornado victims.
In the testimony meeting at the end of the conference, the youths expressed gratitude for being able to help people who really needed them. Many spoke of the blessings that they had and how quickly life can change for anyone when disasters strike.
