Making his first public appearance since undergoing surgery in September, President Ezra Taft Benson attended the First Presidency Christmas Devotional in the Tabernacle on Dec. 2.

President Benson was eager to share his warmth with a smile and a wave to the congregation and to Mormon Tabernacle Choir members following the devotional. As President Gordon B. Hinckley and President Thomas S. Monson helped President Benson to his chair, an air of excitement spread throughout the congregation."We are especially grateful for the presence of President Ezra Taft Benson," President Hinckley said in his welcoming remarks. "This is the first time in a while that he has attended a public meeting. We are delighted and honored that he is with us. We welcome him most warmly. He's asked that we extend his love and appreciation for the many prayers of faith offered in his behalf and extend his wish for a very Merry Christmas."
