The remainder of the day was taken up with committee meetings and appointments.

He spent Tuesday evening at home with his wife, Frances, their children and spouses and grandchildren.

President Monson told the Church News his birthday provided him a "time for reflection and a period of rededication to our Heavenly Father and His work, and to my wife and family, whom I dearly love."

He said he is looking forward later in the week to joining others for the dedication of the Toronto Ontario Temple. (The dedication will be held Aug. 25-27.) He served as mission president in Toronto from 1959-62. "My wife and children were there with me for that three-year period; our youngest child was born to us in Toronto," he said. "We look forward to meeting dear friends and to participating in that capstone event."

He was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Salt Lake City, to G. Spencer and Gladys Condie Monson. He has served as second counselor to President Benson since Nov. 10, 1985. He had served 22 years in the Council of the Twelve, having been called as an apostle Oct. 4, 1963, at age 36.
