Speaking to about 800 Church members, Gov. Roy Romer called for strong families as a hedge against the need for increased government services.

Romer was the featured speaker at a fireside on March 11 of the Willow Creek Colorado Stake."The failure of families to function effectively results in increased government services," Romer said. "Government spends most of its time making up for failures within the home.

"Individuals must have strong beliefs and act upon them in the form of family and community involvement."

"The governor's appearance fulfills a goal of our members to be better informed on public issues and to be supportive of our elected officials," said high councilor C. Grant Goodson, who arranged the fireside.

"We have a responsibility to be actively involved in the political process and to support those measures which will strengthen the community, state and nation."

Following the governor's address, Pres. Dennis Brown, second counselor in the Denver Colorado Mission, presented Romer and his wife with an engraved, leather-bound LDS edition of the scriptures.

Also featured at the fireside was the Colorado Mormon Chorale. Stake Pres. Robert K. Bills challenged those in attendance to "become informed and involved in. . . local issues."
