Squad wins first place
MIDVALE, UTAHSix LDS young women at Hillcrest High School recently won the United Spirit Association National Title in Anaheim, Calif. All six are close friends and active Church members. They are: Amy McBride, Granite 5th Ward, Sandy Utah Granite Stake; Sharissa Gardner, Hillcrest 4th Ward, Sandy Utah Hillcrest Stake; Shelby Jackson, Midvalley 4th Ward, Sandy Utah Midvalley Fort Union South Stake; Alison Weichers, Union 27th Ward, Sandy Utah Cottonwood Creek Stake; Tricia Tueller, Union 31st Ward, Sandy Utah Cottonwood Creek Stake; and Gina Hale, Falcon Park Ward, Sandy Utah North Stake.
Named All-American (Picture and story)
REXBURG, IDAHO
Cindy Reeder, a sophomore at Ricks College, recently won the 1,500-meter-run at the National Junior College Track Meet in Odessa, Texas. She was also fifth in the 3,000 meters. Both results earned her All-America honors. Cindy is a member of the College 18th Ward, Rexburg Idaho College 3rd Stake, and this fall will attend Weber State University on a track scholarship. Last fall she led the Ricks College Cross Country Team to its second consecutive National Championship.
Teacher of year (Picture and story)
WOODS CROSS, UTAH
Lou Jean Paul, a kindergarten teacher at Washington Elementary School in Bountiful, was recently honored as Utah's Teacher of the Year. A member of the Woods Cross 2nd Ward, Woods Cross Utah Stake, she has been a teacher for 25 years. She tells her students she is not the boss, but their teacher and they must boss themselves. Her husband, Bradley H. Paul, has supported her in teaching by building such items as a reading loft and learning tree for her classroom.
Religious award
OREM, UTAH
Dale Benson has been selected as a recipient of the 1990 Religious Heritage of America Youth Award for his outstanding service and commitment to his church, school and community. Benson, a member of the BYU 62nd Ward, BYU 17th Stake, was chosen for demonstrating in daily life the principles of honesty, integrity and religious values. Selected from nationwide nominations, the BYU student will participate in a leadership conference and be honored Sunday Oct. 28, 1990, during Religious Heritage of America's 40th Annual National Awards Program in Hershey, Penn.
Athletic scholar (Picture and story)
LOS FRESNOS, TEXAS
Tiani Olson was selected as one of a 12-member 1990 Fina All-State Scholarship Athlete Team. She was chosen for the team from among 2,000 high school seniors from throughout Texas. All team members are top athletes, straight-A students throughout their four years of high school and have outstanding records of school and community participation. Tiani, a member of the Brownsville 2nd Ward in the Harlingen Texas Stake, was student body president of her high school and a state finalist in persuasive speech. She was the number one seed on her tennis team for three years and was district champion of girls singles. She will attend BYU this fall.
Cousins honored
HARRAH, OKLA.
Two cousins, Sam Scroggins and Robert Vincent, shared honors when they received the Grand National Recognition during the Duke University Talent Search. The 12-year-old boys were among seventh grade students recognized in 16 Southern and Midwestern states who received scores comparable to those of college-bound high school seniors on either the ACT or SAT college entrance exams. Sam is a member of the Rome Ward, Marietta Georgia East Stake, and Robert is a member of the Choctaw Ward, Oklahoma City Oklahoma South Stake.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
Scott S. Parker, chief executive officer and president of Intermountain Health Care, recently received the B'nai B'rith National Healthcare Award given annually to an individual in health care who exemplifies the service of community above self. Stake president of the Bountiful Utah Central Stake, Parker was honored for donating countless hours every week to his church service and for making significant accomplishments in the not-for-profit health care field. B'Nai B'rith is the world's largest Jewish organization and the oldest service organization in the United States.
Superior flutist (Picture and story)
MIAMI, FLA.
Lori Ann Nelson, a member of the Cutler Ridge Ward, Miami Florida Stake, received a superior with distinction award for her flute performance in a statewide instrumental competition. Lori, 16, participated in the competition, which featured hundreds of musicians from high schools throughout Florida. She is a student at South Ridge High School and plays in the school band. Lori is a seminary graduate and is active in the Young Women's program of the Church.
Wins fellowship
ITHACA, NEW YORK. Dale J. Pratt, a 1990 Brigham Young University graduate, was among 121 college graduates nationwide to win Mellon Fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation for graduate work. A member of the Ithaca Ward, Ithaca New York Stake, Pratt will attend Cornell University this fall to get a doctorate degree in Spanish literature. He spent the summer in Madrid, Spain, completing an onsite study-research project.
`Awesome Foursome' (Picture and story)
IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO
Teammates on the local WINGS gymnastics team here have been nicknamed the "Awesome Foursome" for their success in gymnastics and friendship. Joseph Allen of the 23rd Ward in the Idaho Falls Idaho West Stake; Cortney Bramwell, Ammon 4th Ward, Ammon Idaho Stake; Roby Harris, Ammon 5th Ward, Ammon Idaho Stake; and Kent Hildebrant, Idaho Falls 26th Ward, Idaho Falls Idaho Central Stake, competed in Seattle, Wash., at the United States Gymnastics Federation Region II Meet. More than 150 boys competed in the 7-9 age group. Joseph earned three gold medals and placed third in the all-around competition in his division. Kent placed eighth in the all around. Roby tied for first place on pommel horse and placed third in the all-around. Cortney took second all-around, along with one gold medal on parallel bars.
Builds homes for poor (Picture and story)
TIJUANA, MEXICO
Judy Yoshiko Shim of Honolulu, Hawaii, spent a week this summer helping to build homes for families currently living in inadequate housing. Judy of the Honolulu University Ward, Honolulu Hawaii Stake, was one of 2,000 volunteers who - along with former Pres. Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter - built 100 homes in Tijuana and seven in San Diego. The effort, known as the Jimmy Carter Work Project, was the focus of Habitat for Humanity's House-Raising Week Worldwide 1990, held June 17-23. Judy lived in a tent city during the week and experienced first hand some of the inadequate housing conditions tens of thousands of people in Tijuana face daily.
