The Brigham Young University football team vaulted to No. 5 in the nation following a 28-21 upset win over the previously No. 1-ranked Miami Hurricanes Sept. 9.

After the hard-fought, nationally televised victory, BYU received three first-place votes and wound up No. 5 in the Associated Press poll and No. 7 in United Press International.Cougar quarterback Ty Detmer was named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance, completing 38 of 54 passes for 406 yards and three touchdowns. After the game, sportswriters around the country tabbed Detmer as the early favorite for the Heisman Trophy, given to the nation's top college player at the end of the season.
