The Ricks College Vikings are the No. 1 junior college football team in the nation, according to a National Junior College Athletic Association pre-season poll.

This is the first time the Church-sponsored institution has been tabbed tops in football on the national level. The Vikings, with 16 starters returning from last year's team, finished the 1989 season as No. 10 in the NJCAA with an 8-2-1 record. Ricks' passing attack averaged 242.3 yards a game for the year, the third best among junior colleges.

In another recent poll, Ricks was recognized as the fourth-ranked program among the top football junior colleges in the 1980s. Coach Ron Haun has a 67-17-2 record in eight seasons at the school.
