Through service, one can develop greater spirituality, said Elder Derek A. Cuthbert in his address Saturday morning.
"Service changes people," said Elder Cuthbert of the Seventy. "It refines, purifies, gives a finer perspective and brings out the best in each one of us. . . . Righteous service is the expression of true charity, such as the Savior showed."He then shared 10 aspects of service:
- Service helps establish true values and priorities.
"Our beloved prophet counsels, `If you would find yourself. . . forget yourself and find someone who needs your service. . . ,' " he said.
- Service helps establish a righteous tradition.
"Wise parents will provide service opportunities in the home for their children from an early age," counseled Elder Cuthbert. "Growing up with this tradition will blossom into community and Church service."
- Service helps to overcome selfishness and sin.
"Sin is for one's own ends," Elder Cuthbert said. "Service, on the other hand, is unselfish . . . ."
- Service helps to recompense for sin.
"We can express regret and feel remorse for things done wrong, but full repentance should include recompense such as service gives."
- Service helps generate love and appreciation.
"We come to know people by serving them," he said.
- Service shows gratitude to the Savior.
"We need to fill ourselves up with gratitude for His redeeming love, His infinite atoning sacrifice. . . . As we become full of gratitude it overflows into service. . . ."
- Service channels desires and energies into righteous activity.
"Every son and daughter of God is a storehouse . . . of desires and energies, which may be used for good or evil," he cautioned. "This great potential needs to be harnessed to bring blessings to others."
- Service helps cleanse ourselves and become purified and sanctified.
"We all need the redeeming and atoning blood of Christ to purge us of our sins. The way is through Christlike service. . . ."
- Charitable service helps people do as the Savior did.
Elder Cuthbert related once when two Nigerians stopped to help fix their broken car. "The Lord told us to stop and help you," they said.
"Help us they did for they knew what the Lord would have them do."
- Service helps to get to know the Savior.
"As we immerse ourselves in the service of others we find our spiritual selves and truly come unto Him.
"In all of these ways," he said, "righteous service brings us nearer to Christ. . . . Such service is helping to prepare a people . . . to redeem Zion."
