As if coming to a replenishing spiritual reservoir, thousands of members from many parts of the world gathered April 6-7 in the Tabernacle on Temple Square for the 161st Annual General Conference.
Many who hoped to get an in-person glimpse of President Ezra Taft Benson had their wish fulfilled as the 91-year-old prophet took his customary place on the stand in two of the conference's general sessions.Beside him, giving loving support, were his counselors, President Gordon B. Hinckley and President Thomas S. Monson.
President Benson attended the Saturday and Sunday morning sessions; he had opportunity to view other sessions on television in his apartment.
The conference included two general sessions and a priesthood session on Saturday, April 6, and two general sessions on Sunday, April 7.
During the conference, six new General Authorities were sustained to the Second Quorum of the Seventy, and five already serving in that quorum were called to the First Quorum of the Seventy. (See box on this page, and biographical information on page 4.)
President Hinckley and President Monson took turns conducting the conference sessions and addressing the congregation that filled the Tabernacle and Assembly Hall on Temple Square and was carried via satellite to some 3,000 meetinghouses throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
In the opening and closing addresses of conference, President Hinckley and President Monson repeated messages and counsel delivered by the prophet on earlier occasions.
Twenty-seven Church leaders delivered 31 addresses during the conference.
On the first day of conference weekend, crowds of people on Temple Square enjoyed mild "shirt-sleeve" weather. However, Sunday's weather was cooler. Overcoats, sweaters and blankets were put to good use as cold winds whipped through the square and set hundreds to shivering while they waited to enter the Tabernacle where Church leaders would once again serve up a veritable spiritual feast in the form of prayerfully prepared conference addresses.
