BYU quarterback Ty Detmer became the all-time NCAA career passing leader Sept. 7, breaking the previous record of 11,425 yards held by Todd Santos since 1987.

Detmer completed 29 of 46 passes for 377 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions as the Cougars lost to UCLA, 27-23, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.Last year's Heisman Trophy winner broke the record late in the second quarter when he hit wide receiver Micah Matsuzaki on a short toss to the right side for five yards. That gave him 199 yards to that point, two more than he needed to pass Santos, who went to San Diego State.
