Frequent temple attendance, and temple work in behalf of deceased ancestors, were encouraged by Elder David B. Haight and Elder Russell M. Nel son of the Council of the Twelve.

"All the temple ordinances are centered in Jesus Christ and His divine mission," said Elder Haight. "Temple involvement by members can help them keep a proper focus on the things of God."Certainly every effort should be made to get members to the temple for their own ordinances. . . . It can be done. This is critical because they can receive these ordinances in no other place.

"Great blessings come to members who return to the temple often in behalf of the dead as they worship the Lord and commune with the Spirit. Members should attend the temple as often as reasonably possible, without neglecting family or other personal duties."

He encouraged using all the teaching skills that leaders can muster, with "testimony and scriptures, and fasting and then more teaching and more effective testifying," to teach Church members of the eternal significance of the ordinances and covenants.

In his remarks, Elder Nelson said most members can immediately begin to participate in temple work for their deceased ancestors. First, they can identify an ancestor for whom information is readily available, and collect that information. Second, they review their information and determine what ordinance work remains, and third, take part in obtaining those ordinances for the ancestor.

"We live in a remarkable time," he concluded. "The hearts of children throughout the world are turning to their fathers. Nations of the earth are now requesting help from this Church in the preservation of their irreplaceable ancestral records. . . .

"We are witnessing exponential progress in this sacred work that the Lord has commanded us to do."
