President Monson
Young men of the Church are pliable, eager and filled with unlimited energy, President Thomas S. Monson said in the Saturday evening priesthood session.
"The years in the Aaronic Priesthood are growing years," explained President Monson, second counselor in the First Presidency. "They are years . . . when wise counseling and proper example by an inspired leader can work wonders and lift lives."
President Monson spoke about several areas of interest to young men. In meeting their needs to take part in organized sports, the Church provides athletic programs and physical facilities at "enormous financial investment," he said. However, the goals of fellowship and brotherhood are defeated if "winning the game overshadows participation in the game."
Another area of vital interest to young men is Scouting, said President Monson. "If ever there were a generation who would benefit by keeping physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight - that generation is the present generation."
He told the story of a dramatic rescue by a Scout of his younger brother who nearly drowned. "Is Scouting relevant?" he asked. "Ask a mother, a father, a family who know a Scouting skill saved a son and brother."
Speaking to those serving in priesthood leadership positions, President Monson said, "Our Heavenly Father has inspired your call and desires that you succeed. The Lord will hear your prayers and guide your decisions, for this is His work in which we are engaged."
President Monson encouraged priesthood leaders to visit the homes of quorum members, bless the sick, help a member and comfort grieving hearts, all of which are "sacred privileges of priesthood service."
President Monson also spoke of missionary service, and commented to the young men: "I trust that all young men here tonight are preparing now to serve a full-time mission in the service of the Lord.
"You will never know the full influence of your testimony and your service, but you will return with gladness for having had the privilege of responding to a sacred call to serve the Master."
