Sam K. Shimabukuro of Honolulu, Hawaii, has been called to serve in the Second Quorum of the Seventy, the First Presidency has announced.
Born in Waipahu, Hawaii, of Japanese descent, Elder Shimabukuro, 66, earned a degree in public administration from the University of Hawaii, and retired after a career with the Hawaii State Department of labor. He also served 2 1/2 years in the U.S. Army.At the time of his call as a General Authority he was serving as president of the Honolulu Hawaii West Stake, to which he was called in January 1989. Previously, he served as president of the Japan Sendai Mission from 1981-1984 and as president of the Tokyo Temple from 1985-1988. He has also been a bishop and high councilor. He served as a missionary in the Northern Far East Mission.
Elder Shimabukuro and his wife, Amy Michiko Hirose, were married Oct. 28, 1957, in the Hawaii Temple. They are parents of a daughter who is deceased.
