Some 40,800 pounds of food supplies from the Central Bishops Storehouse left Salt Lake City Dec. 17, bound for Russia.

The Church is participating in the food shipment under auspices of the Children as the Peacemakers Foundation, based in San Francisco.Church spokesman Don LeFevre said the food - flour, beans, rice, powdered milk, canned meat and applesauce - was loaded on a semi-trailer truck at the storehouse and shipped to San Francisco, Calif., where it will be combined with other donations and transported by air to Moscow the following week.

Elaine Bellezza, the foundation's international coordinator said the food is earmarked for distribution to foster homes and orphanages as the main recipients.

The foundation, which promotes the welfare of children internationally, contacted the Church requesting participation in the food shipment. Through arrangements with the Soviet consulate in San Francisco, the Soviet government is providing three cargo planes to pick up the food shipment.

Under the Church Welfare Plan, fast offering contributions and voluntary labor from Church members keep the Church's bishops storehouses stocked in supplies, from which the Church participates in such humanitarian projects as this.
