Success or achievement in life depends on preparation, said Elder David B. Haight of the Council of the Twelve in his address at the priesthood session Saturday evening.
Speaking particularly to young men, Elder Haight emphasized, "The Aaronic Priesthood years are critical years of preparation."Laughter rang through the Tabernacle as Elder Haight related a humorous experience of when he was a halfback on an unexperienced, ill-equipped football team. His unprepared team lost 106-6 to a powerful opponent.
To avoid such mishaps in life, young men need to take full advantage of "these valuable teen years to prepare for life - precious years with meaningful, never-to-be-forgotten spiritual experiences," declared Elder Haight.
He observed that uncompromising determination and commitment are needed to endure pressure and hardship. "Oh, how this world needs committed, determined, and courageous young people - young men with a righteous conviction - who will help bind up its wounds and teach faith, hope and truth! Where will these people come from? They will come from the ranks of the young men and women of this Church - that's where."
Young men should build a foundation on the principles taught by the Savior, Elder Haight admonished. Doing so will give strength to "work out our salvation in the presence of evil. Just because evil exists does not mean we must partake of it. You cannot do wrong and feel right."
He urged young men to become personally converted to gospel truths.
"Your continuing preparation is to be worthy to receive the Melchizedek Priesthood - keeping yourself clean and honorable and praying for strength and courage to withstand the evil temptations that surely will come to every young man.
"If a mistake is made, discuss it with your bishop immediately. Do not let mistakes get an upper hold on you. . . ."
Elder Haight concluded by encouraging young men to make a commitment to serve a full-time mission. "The Lord needs your service, and you need the unmeasured blessings."
