Susan Covalt, 9, recently won first place in team Kata, second place in Kumite and fourth places in weapons and individual Kata in the International Karate Federation Tournament here. Last June, she participated in the AAU/USA National Karate Championships in New Orleans, La., where she won one gold and two silver medals. Susan is a member of the Hawaii Kai 2nd Ward, Honolulu Hawaii Stake.

LAKE CITY, FLA.

Judge E. Vernon Douglas was recently elected president of the International Council of Air Shows at the 22nd annual convention in Las Vegas, Nev. He is elders quorum president in the Lake City 1st Ward, Lake City Florida Stake. The International Council of Air Shows, composed of more than 1,000 members from England, the Soviet Union, Mexico, Canada and the United States, is the professional organization for safety, training, and promotion of air shows, their performers and producers. Douglas is a circuit court judge in the Third Judicial Circuit of Florida.

Receives Scout award

FORT WAYNE, IND.

Scoutmaster Steven D. Newhard has been named the 1990 winner of the Indiana George Meany Scouting Award. The award recognizes outstanding service to Boy Scouts by labor union members. Newhard, a member of the Fort Wayne 2nd Ward, Fort Wayne Indiana Stake, has been involved in Scouting since becoming a Cub Scout in 1951. He currently serves as Scoutmaster of Troop 39.

Multiple missionaries

ROOSEVELT, UTAH

Four of the nine children of Rondal and Sharon McKee are currently serving missions. The oldest daughter, Michelle, is serving in the Spain Barcelona Mission and another daughter, Suzette, is in the Scotland Edinburgh Mission. Two sons, part of the family's set of triplets, are serving missions. Trevor is in the Iowa Des Moines Mission and Russell is in the Canada Vancouver Mission. The other triplet, Kristin, is attending Ricks College and plans a mission when she is old enough. Brother McKee is bishop of the Tridell Ward, Roosevelt Utah East Stake.

Elected president

PROVO, UTAH

Brigham Young University elected its first woman student body president when Amy Baird won 61 percent of the votes in a recent election on campus. The 20-year-old senior from Provo, majoring in education, will serve approximately 27,000 students, with more than 5,000 actively involved in BYU's student service association. She is a member of the Edgemont 17th Ward, Provo Utah Edgemont South Stake. In the 100 years that BYU has elected student officials, only one other woman has served as student body president. However, she was not elected; she was elected as vice president and replaced the president when he was drafted during World War II in 1943.

Wins safety award

COOKEVILLE, TENN.

Douglas Adams, a priest in the

Cookeville Ward, Nashville Tennessee Stake, won the National 4-H Safety Program award for his involvement in the 4-H Club's safety projects. GMC Truck, sponsor of the safety program, awarded Douglas and seven other national winners $1,000 scholarships at the 1990 National 4-H Congress. The winners were chosen from more than 250,000 youth involved in 4-H safety projects.

PROVO, UTAH

Miles R. Hunsaker, a BYU senior, has returned from Kansas where he represented universities throughout the nation in his capacity as student representative on the national steering committee of Industry Foundation, a professional Interior Design Organization. He was appointed to serve with the organization in August at the national conference of American Society of Interior Designers. He was also elected as national Student Council regional vice president at the conference to oversee activities of 10 universities in the Rocky Mountain region. Hunsaker was elected to receive the first American Society of Interior Designers Educational Foundation/Steven Harris Memorial Scholarship. He also has received the outstanding student award from the College of Fine Arts and Communication at BYU. He is a member of the BYU 154th Ward, Brigham Young University 2nd Stake.

Wins championship

PRINCE GEORGE,

BRITISH COLUMBIA

Laura Lee Edgson, a member of the Prince George Branch in the Canada Vancouver Mission, recently won the middleweight right arm title at the World Wrist Wrestling Championship held in Petaluma, Calif. She placed second in the left arm competition. Laura plans to defend her title next year and hopes to represent Canada at the next Olympics in arm wrestling as a preliminary sport.

Fifth from ward

HAYWARD, CALIF.

When Joan Shumate, a member of the Hayward 1st Ward, Hayward California Stake, received the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award, she became the fifth Scout leader from the Hayward 1st Ward to do so. A mother of six, Sister Shumate keeps busy not only with Scouting but also with PTA, helping physically disabled children and teaching school at the county juvenile facility. Four other ward leaders have received the Silver Beaver award since 1979.

Named all-American

BOISE, IDAHO

Julie Johnson was recently selected by the National High School Coaches Association to the 1990 National High School honorable mention all-American tennis team. A senior at Capital High School in Boise, Julie has helped lead the school to two state team championships. An honor student and seminary council leader, Julie is a member of the Boise 19th Ward, Boise Idaho North Stake.

Banker honored

MISSION BAY, CALIF.

Michael P. Morgan, second counselor in the Mission Bay Ward, San Diego California North Stake, was recently presented the 1990 Professional Achievement award in banking by the Utah State University Alumni and the Utah Bankers Associations. Morgan is vice president and manager for First Interstate Bank of California, Rancho Bernardo Business Banking Group.

Composer honored

MONMOUTH, ORE.

A. Laurence Lyon, music professor at Western Oregon State College, is a recipient of the 1990-91 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers award, recognizing his music composition writing. After winning the national composer's award, he traveled to Taiwan and Korea where he presented workshops to nearly 150 music teachers. Lyon, a member of the Monmouth Ward, Salem Oregon Stake, has published more than 150 compositions. His works have been performed by the Mormon Youth Symphony and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Heads expedition

GRAND JUNCTION, COLO.

John Heimburger, a member of the Grand Junction 5th Ward, Grand Junction Colorado West Stake, has been named expedition coordinator for the 1991 Continental Airlines Himalayan Expedition. A pilot for the airlines, Heimburger directed the 1985 Frontier Nepal-Everest Expedition. The 1991 goal is a 22,000-foot snow and ice pinnacle in Nepal, between Annapurna and the Tibetan border. The five-week climb this fall will include representatives from 10 U.S. states and three foreign countries.

Gives legislative idea

HERMISTON, ORE.

Brian Fisher, a seventh grader and a member of the Hermiston 3rd Ward, Hermiston Oregon Stake, was chosen along with 15 other students from throughout Oregon to present his idea for a new state law at the Children's Day celebration at the state Capitol. His proposed bill suggested that every district have a teenage representative to help make decisions about what occurs in the district and state. The proposed bills by the 16 students, chosen from 20,000 others submitted around the state, will be considered during the 1991 Legislature.

Oustanding director

CHESTER, IDAHO

Rosemary Brown, Young Women adviser in the Chester Ward, Ashton Idaho Stake, received the award of excellence as the outstanding director of nursing for Paradigm Corporation. Sister Brown, director of nursing at the Rexburg Nursing Center, received the award at a national meeting in Albuquerque, N.M., for her leadership abilities. Paradigm Corp. is an Ohio-based company that owns and operates nursing centers throughout the United States.
