"Much of the Holy Land is desert with very little water. It logically follows that water would be scarce and precious, and surely the object of special lessons taught by the Lord," Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Council of the Twelve told missionaries in an address at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, last Dec. 11.
"Amidst wilderness and desert desolation such as this, the Savior was able to teach important lessons that only those who knew what it was to be thirsty could fully appreciate. To the woman of Samaria at the well He said:" `But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.' " (John 4:14.)
Of the story of Jesus teaching the woman of Samaria, Relief Society Gen. Pres. Elaine L. Jack told the Church News:
"The Savior loves each individual. No story from His earth life shows this more than the story of the Samaritan woman at the well. He taught her the significant lesson about living water. Through His teaching and their dialogue, she understood that He was indeed the Christ.
"I take great comfort from this story. I learn and relearn how much the Savior loves each of us, how important His ministry was, and how I can `never thirst.' In these troubled times, how comforting and refreshing it is to be invited to drink from the `well of water springing up into everlasting life.' "
