President Howard W. Hunter of the Council of the Twelve is commemorating his 85th birthday Saturday, Nov. 14.
He was born in 1907 in Boise, Idaho, to John William and Nellie Rasmussen Hunter. He married Clara May Jeffs on June 10, 1931, in the Salt Lake Temple; they had three children. She died Oct. 9, 1983. On April 12, 1990, President Hunter married Inis Egan in the Salt Lake Temple.He was sustained to the Council of the Twelve Oct. 10, 1959, at age 51. He has been president of the Council of the Twelve since June 2, 1988; before that, he served as acting president for nearly three years.
He graduated cum laude from Southwestern University Law School in Los Angeles with a juris doctorate. He was a leading corporate attorney in Southern California when called to the Twelve. Before he became a General Authority, he served as chairman of the Southern California Welfare Region and Los Angeles Welfare Region, as a stake president and as a bishop.
