Frank Fredericks, winner of two silver medals at the Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, has made Pres. Rex E. Lee of Brigham Young University - a runner of more modest achievements - a happy man.
"We want to recognize the unusual accomplishments of our friend and student," Pres. Lee said. "Frank is the only Olympic sprinter to medal in both the 100-meter and 200-meter events."Fredericks graduated last spring with a bachelor's degree in computer science.
"We join with his native Namibia in expressing our joy at his accomplishments," Pres. Lee said. "It is an honor to have him as one of our graduates, and we look forward to welcoming him back to our MBA program this fall. Frank is much more than one of the world's best athletes. He is also a superb human being and representative of the values for which BYU stands."
Two other BYU athletes, both from Nigeria, won medals in the men's and women's 4x100 relays. Oluyemi Kayode won a silver medal in the men's race, and Christy Opara Thompson won a bronze in the women's event.
