The set was presented to the library by President Gordon B. Hinckley during a visit to Italy on his recent trip to Europe, said Elder Spencer J. Condie of the Seventy and president of the Europe/Mediterranean Area of the Church.

On March 11, President and Sister Hinckley, Elder Condie and Pres. and Sister Richard Favero of the Italy Rome Mission visited the Vatican. There President Hinckley presented the Encyclopedia of Mormonism to the Rev. Leonard Boyle, prefect of the Vatican Library, who accepted the books "with pleasure and assured President Hinckley that the volumes would be a valued asset to their collection," said Elder Condie.

The Rev. Boyle then gave the group a tour of the library, which included inspection of rare biblical parchment manuscripts dating from 818 A.D. He also presented President Hinckley a copy of "The Vatican Library," a book he had authored.
