The touching account in 3 Nephi 17 of the Savior's compassion on the multitude is reminiscent of a New Testament verse:
"But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd." (Matt. 9:36.)Numerous instances in the Savior's mortal ministry - often involving the performance of miracles - illustrate Christ's compassion. These include the raising of Lazarus from the dead, prior to which, "Jesus wept," (John 11:35) and the feeding of the 5,000, on which occasion Jesus "saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick." (John 14:14.)
In 3 Nephi 17, the multitude tearfully yearns to have Jesus tarry with them. He heals their sick and afflicted, then blesses their children one by one. Thereafter follows a heavenly manifestation in which the children are surrounded by fire and ministered to by angels.
The compassion shown by Jesus is a model for all who would minister in His name.
