- As the Saturday afternoon session drew to a close on a warm, summer-like day, President Thomas S. Monson, who conducted the session, announced that the closing hymn by the BYU Combined Choirs would be: "Awake, Ye Saints of God, Awake."

"I think that's appropriate for an afternoon session," said President Monson, drawing laughter from the congregation.

The combined choir opened the session with, "The Lord Is My Shepherd." The singers also sang "Jesus the Very Thought of Thee," and were joined by the congregation in singing "Redeemer of Israel."

Prayers were offered by Elder John B. Dickson and Elder Hans B. Ringger of the Seventy, who gave the invocation and benediction, respectively. In announcing that Elder Ringger would give the benediction, President Monson declared, "Here is an unsung hero in our age. Much of the success which the Church has enjoyed in countries in Europe which heretofore have not had the blessings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is due to the heroic and the faithful and the persevering efforts of [Elder Ringger]."
