- The pre-session bustle among the Tabernacle congregation was instantly stilled as the counselors in the First Presidency entered. In a dramatic contrast to the previous moment, the people stood in silent respect as Presidents Gordon B. Hinckley and Thomas S. Monson greeted members of the Twelve on the rostrum.
In the "Music and the Spoken Word" broadcast Sunday morning, the Tabernacle Choir performed selections that were a fitting prelude to the sermons at the conference session. Especially appropriate was "Song of Ruth," a musical setting for the scripture in Ruth 1:16-17. Elder Monte J. Brough, in his talk about "mighty men," quoted that scripture and said Ruth is an example of a "mighty woman." Also, "Saul" was a dramatic composition about the Savior, in vision, calling Saul to repentance. Saul became Paul, one of the greatest missionaries who ever lived, and the song seemed to foreshadow Elder David B. Haight's talk about missionary work.
President Thomas S. Monson conducted the session, with the invocation by Elder Robert E. Wells of the Seventy and the benediction by Elder In Sang Han of the Seventy.
