The basketball team of the Stornaway Branch in the Scotland Edinburgh Mission played "the best basketball ever on the island," according to a local newspaper.
The team, coached by Elder Robert C. Monson, serving in the Scotland mission with his wife, Laura, was praised after it won the recent Lewis-Harris Sports Festival. The Monsons are members of the Mount Olympus 12th Ward, Salt Lake Mount Olympus Stake.Under Elder Monson's direction, the branch team of seven players won all six of the tournament's 10-minute games. The branch team defeated four teams in their division with scores of 12-0, 12-0, 14-2, 17-3, and in the semifinals, won 14-10. They won the championship against a Royal Air Force team, 25-15.
The local newspaper, the Stornaway Gazette, observed the high quality of play on the branch team, and challenged all teams to meet this standard of play in the future.
Branch teams previously won the championship in 1988, 1989, and 1990.
