Eleven General Authorities and 30 Provo, Utah, area stake presidents participated in the Sept. 15, 1969, groundbreaking for the Provo Temple, according to the Sept. 20, 1969, issue of the Church News."President Hugh B. Brown, first counselor in the First Presidency, turned the first shovelful of dirt, then the rest of the General Authorities joined in, followed by the stake presidents of the Provo Temple district. Bishops from the area were next, and then the public had a turn with the shovels."
President N. Eldon Tanner, second counselor in the First Presidency, conducted the service, attended by more than 12,000 people. President Brown, in the main address, complimented Church members for their willingness to contribute their time and money toward building the kingdom.
He recounted his own contributions to the Church, both in time and money, and then stated, "The Church owes me not one cent. I have received more than I have ever given. . . . I repeat, the Lord owes me nothing, I owe Him everything." President Tanner expressed greetings to the group from Church President David O. McKay, who did not attend due to ill health.
