The First Presidency Christmas message celebrated the conclusion of World War II and the return of peace to much of the world, reported the Dec. 15, 1945, Church News.
Signed by President George Albert Smith and his counselors, President J. Reuben Clark Jr. and President David O. McKay, the holiday message was printed on the cover of the issue.
"Peace-loving people everywhere, this Yuletide, have special cause for rejoicing. The cruel and devastating world war is ended. . . .
"Armed conflict having ceased, many soldiers who, last year and the year before that, were offering their lives in airplanes, on battleships and cruisers, in fox holes, or lying wounded in hospitals, will spend this joyous Christmas at home. Many who are still serving in foreign lands are thankful that the war is ended, and happy in the thought that they, too, may soon be homeward bound."
Quote from the past
"The various pains and sorrows to be endured in life are all necessary in their time and place. . . . They are all a part of the scheme of education or training to prepare us for the future." - Elder Erastus Snow, in an address given in October 1879 in Brigham City, Utah.
