Academics

- Adrian "Regale" Russell of the Fort Wayne 1st Ward, Fort Wayne Indiana Stake, won several awards at the Latin National Convention in Kansas City, Kan., this summer. High school students from across the country who study Latin gather annually and compete in various events. Adrian's awards included first in first year dramatic interpretation and Latin oratory, and sixth in Latin sight reading. He ended up in a tie for fourth place in the sweepstakes.

Business

- John R. Poulton of the Monument Park 3rd Ward, Salt Lake Foothill Stake, is the recipient of the 1995 Life Achievement Award from The Utah Association of Life Underwriters. He received the award at the association's state convention this past summer. The award is given for oustanding service and accomplishment to the industry and in the community.

- Keith L. Hancock is Realtor of the Year for Southern Alberta. He is an officiator in the Alberta Temple and stake missionary to the Foremost Branch, Raymond Alberta Stake. After he was nominated for the award by his peers, he was chosen by an independent panel of judges. The award is based on integrity, leadership and dedication to the real estate industry as well as to community and church. Brother Hancock owns his real estate firm and has served as a director and vice president for the Lethbridge Real Estate Board Co-op for five years.

Centenarian

- Kenneth W. Burnett of the Yale 1st Ward, Salt Lake Bonneville Stake, turned 100 years old on Sept. 30. He was born in Salt Lake City. Brother Burnett graduated from Salt Lake High School and served in the U.S. military during World War I. He married Melba Brewer in the Salt Lake Temple on June 20, 1923, and they had six children. She died June 16, 1994. He served in the Central States Mission and also served with his wife in the England Birmingham Mission. A former bishop and stake high councilor, he also served 12 years with his wife as a temple worker.

Athletics

- Kristen Olsen and Jeff Anderson of the Idaho Falls Idaho South Stake each won their division of the Rocky Mountain Sectional to earn a place in the PGA Junior Championship golf tournament this past summer. Kristen has also won the Idaho Junior Golf State Championship and the Idaho Falls Country Club Girls' Junior Championship. She is a senior at Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls. Among Jeff's achievements, he has won the Idaho Falls Country Club Junior Championship and was a high school all-district, all-conference and all-state performer in 1995. He is a junior at Idaho Falls High School.

- Janet Blomstedt of the Lincoln 4th Ward, Lincoln Nebraska Stake, is the first athlete from the United States to win the gold medal in the heptathlon at the Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships. The University of Nebraska Junior earned 5,304 points to claim the medal in Santiago, Chile, in September. The Hershey, Neb., athlete now has her sights set on trying to qualify for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Events in the heptathlon are the shot put, high jump, long jump, 100-meter dash and 800-meter run.

- Brian Wesenberg of the Peterborough Ward, Oshawa Ontario Stake, was drafted 29th overall by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the recent National Hockey League draft. Brian had been playing for the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League.

Law Enforcement

- Seth K. Kuoha and Charles Browning of the Santee 3rd Ward, Santee California Stake, were both recently honored in San Diego. Brother Kuoha, elders quorum president, was named 1995 Police Officer of the Year. He is a member of the Driving Under the Influence Enforcement Team of the San Diego Police Department and has twice been honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving for his arrests of DUI offenders. Brother Browning, second counselor in the bishopric, was honored as 1995 Marshal of the Year for his dedication and daily average of more than three felony arrests.
