After becoming president of the Church last June, President Howard W. Hunter kept up a busy speaking schedule. Below are excerpts from some of his addresses while he was the prophet:
- ATONEMENT
Any time we experience the blessings of the Atonement in our lives, we cannot help but have a concern for the welfare of others. - New Mission Presidents' Seminar, June 21
- COVENANTS
I am impressed by a statement on the title page of the Book of Mormon that describes one of the purposes of that sacred book: "That they [the House of Israel in the latter-days] may know the covenants of the Lord." (Italics added.) That was the emphasis we as a stake presidency felt impressed to make to those less active. We tried to appeal to them on the basis of the importance of the covenants they had made with the Lord; then we taught them the importance of the covenants of baptism and additional covenants that they could make which would unite them as an eternal family. - Priesthood leadership session, Tucson Arizona Regional Conference, Sept. 17
- FAMILY
In the ordinances of the temple, the foundations of the eternal family are sealed in place. The Church has the responsibility - and the authority - to preserve and protect the family as the foundation of society. - General conference, opening session, Oct. 2, 1994.
- FAMILY HISTORY/TEMPLE WORK
We who live in this day are those whom God appointed before birth to be His representatives on earth in this dispensation. We are of the house of Israel. In our hands lie the sacred powers of being saviors on Mount Zion in the latter days.
. . . As we attend the temple and perform work for the dead, we acquire a deep sense of alliance with God and a better understanding of His plan for the salvation of the human race. We learn to love our neighbors as ourselves. Truly there is no work equal to that done in the temple. - Genealogical Society of Utah centennial commemoration, Nov. 13, 1994
- GOSPEL
This world needs the gospel of Jesus Christ as restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith. The gospel provides the only way the world will ever know peace. We need to be kinder with one another, more gentle and forgiving. We need to be slower to anger and more prompt to help. We need to extend the hand of friendship and resist the hand of retribution. In short, we need to love one another with the pure love of Christ, with genuine charity and compassion and, if necessary, shared suffering, for that is the way God loves us. - Satellite broadcast commemorating 150th anniversary of martyrdom of Joseph Smith, Carthage, Ill., June 26, 1994
- JESUS CHRIST
A study of the life of Christ and a testimony of His reality is something each of us should seek. As we come to understand His mission and the atonement which He wrought, we will desire to live more like Him. We especially encourage the young men and young women to come to know the reason for the atoning sacrifice of our Lord. - Tucson Arizona Regional Conference, Sept. 18, 1994
We are at a time in the history of the world and the growth of the Church when we must think more of holy things and act more like the Savior would expect His disciples to act. We should at every opportunity ask ourselves, "What would Jesus do?" and then act more courageously upon the answer. - General conference, closing session, Oct. 2, 1994
Never did the Savior give in expectation of receiving. He gave freely and lovingly, and His gifts were of inestimable value. He gave eyes to the blind, ears to the deaf, and legs to the lame; cleanliness to the unclean, wholeness to the infirm, and breath to the lifeless. His gifts were opportunity to the downtrodden, freedom to the oppressed, forgiveness to the repentant, hope to the despairing, and light in the darkness. He gave us His love, His service, and His life. And most important, He gave us and all mortals resurrection, salvation and eternal life.
We should strive to give as He gave. To give of oneself is a holy gift. We give as a remembrance of all the Savior has given. - First Presidency Christmas Devotional, Dec. 4, 1994
While it will be a beautiful sight to see the lights of Christmas on this square, it is more important to have human lives illuminated by an acceptance of Him who is the Light of the world. Truly we should hold Him as our guide and exemplar. - Mexico City Temple Christmas lighting ceremony, Dec. 11, 1994
- JOSEPH SMITH
Joseph Smith's greatness consists in one thing - the truthfulness of his declaration that he saw the Father and the Son and that he responded to the reality of that divine revelation. He was directed to re-establish the true and living Church, restored in these modern times as it existed in the day of the Savior's own mortal ministry. The Prophet Joseph Smith was fearless in pursuing this divine mission. - Martyrdom sesquicentennial satellite broadcast, Carthage, Ill., June 26, 1994
- MISSIONARY SERVICE
A great indicator of your personal conversion to the gospel of Jesus Christ is the desire to share it with others. For this reason the Lord gave a charge to every member of the Church to be a missionary. Each of us present today has a duty to bear faithful testimony of our Lord and Savior and His restored gospel. - Missionary Training Satellite Broadcast, Sept. 13, 1994
- OBEDIENCE
We need to keep the commandments of God, and we need to encourage all to do so. Obedience is the most genuine way to show our love for God. - Martyrdom sesquicentennial satellite broadcast, Carthage, Ill., June 26, 1994
- TEMPLE WORTHINESS
Having worthy and endowed members is the key to building the Kingdom in all the world. Temple worthiness ensures that our lives are in harmony with the will of the Lord, and we are attuned to receive His guidance in our lives. - Martyrdom Sesquicentennial, Nauvoo Temple site, June 26, 1994
May we each live our lives in such a way as to be worthy to receive a temple recommend and enter into the temple there to provide opportunity for salvation for the dead and for the personal blessing of temple worship which will come into our own lives. - Nauvoo Ward sacrament meeting, June 26, 1994
- UNITY
It is unity that has thus far enabled the Church, its wards and stakes, branches and districts, and members, to construct temples and chapels, seek after the dead, watch over the Church, and build faith. More must be done. These great purposes of the Lord could not have been achieved with dissension, jealousy or selfishness. Our ideas may not always be quite like those who preside over us, but this is the Lord's Church and He will bless each of us as we cast off pride, pray for strength and contribute to the good of the whole. - Creation of the Mexico City Mexico Contreras Stake, the 2,000th in the Church, Dec. 11, 1994
