And it came to pass that there were many who died, firmly believing that their souls were redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ; thus they went out of the world rejoicing. . . . But there were many who died with old age; and those who died in the faith of Christ are happy in him, as we must needs suppose. - Alma 46:39, 41
I was in my second week at the Missionary Training Center, preparing to go to Argentina on my mission, when one afternoon I was called into the president's office. My thoughts went wild. Something must have happened at home, but what could it be?
It was a very long walk to the main building from my classroom. As I arrived the president invited me in and we exchanged greetings. He told me he had some bad news for me. My mother, grandmother, and brothers and sisters had been involved in a car accident. Then he told me that my precious grandmother had died. The tears flowed down my face. I felt very lonely for the next few days and found myself praying often for my mother and aunt. I knew that Grandma's death would be the hardest on them.
It was under these circumstances that I found this scripture in Alma. When I read it I knew that my grandmother was better off where she was, for I knew that she had been one of those who kept the faith until her last day in mortality. It was comforting to think about how she had made it through her trials in this life and it gave me more strength to overcome the trials I would see in my mission. - Elder Bart L. Rasmussen, Argentina Buenos Aires West Mission.
