BYU president Rex E. Lee with his wife, Janet, at his side, talked of life's miracles and bore testimony of the gospel in a farewell devotional Tuesday, Dec. 12. He will leave his position as president Dec. 31.
Speaking to an audience of nearly 5,500 in the Marriott Center, Pres. Lee bore testimony of the restoration of the gospel. He also proclaimed that Joseph Smith is the prophet the Lord chose to restore the gospel and usher in the dispensation of the fullness of times. Then he said, "These, my brothers and sisters, are eternal truths which have eternal and enormous importance for us in our individual lives, a great miracle affecting everyone who ever lived, tied to more personalized miracles that I hope will play out in the lives of each of us."
President and Sister Lee took turns delivering portions of the final address to the general student body.
At the conclusion of their talk, they were presented with Hawaiian leis by BYU-Hawaii president Eric B. Shumway and received a prolonged standing ovation from the audience.
In their address, President and Sister Lee recalled serious health problems that threatened his life prior to his call to lead BYU and the miracles that enabled him to serve beginning in 1989.
Then Sister Lee said: "Nearly seven years ago we saw our forthcoming time at BYU as a gift we could give for the miracle of life we had been given. Now looking back, we have been the recipients of the gift and you at BYU are the givers."
