Five members of the Second Quorum of the Seventy were released during the Saturday afternoon session of conference.

They are Elder Eduardo Ayala, Elder LeGrand R. Curtis, Elder Helvecio Martins, Elder J Ballard Washburn and Elder Durrell A. Woolsey. All five were sustained to the Second Quorum of the Seventy on March 31, 1990. Members of the Second Quorum serve for a period of five years.Elder Ayala, 58, was born May 3, 1937, in Coronel, Chile. He and his wife, Blanca Expinoza Ayala, were baptized in 1969. Before his baptism, he worked as an administrator with an electrical company in Santiago, Chile. In 1974, he became director of seminaries and institutes for the Church Educational System.

Since his call as a General Authority, he has served as a counselor in the South America North Area presidency and in the presidency of the South America South Area. Before serving in the Seventy, he served as president of the Uruguay Montevideo Mission, as a regional representative, as a sealer in the Santiago Chile Temple, twice as a stake president and as a district president. Elder and Sister Ayala are the parents of three children.

Elder Curtis, 71, was born May 22, 1924, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended the University of Utah and later received a master's degree and doctorate in dentistry and orthodontics from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He served in the Army from 1943-1944 and in the U.S. Navy Reserve Dental Corps from 1946-1948.

He has served, since his calling to the Seventy, as a member of the North America Northwest Area presidency. Elder Curtis also served as a counselor in the general presidency of the Aaronic Priesthood MIA and in the Young Men general presidency. He is former president of the Florida Tallahassee Mission, and is a former regional representative, stake president, counselor in a stake presidency and bishop. He and his wife, Patricia Glade Curtis, are the parents of eight children.

Elder Martins, 65, was born July 27, 1930, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is a former assistant professor at Rio de Janeiro State University, a financial management controller for Petrobras, S.A., and a financial director of Liderbras, S.A. The Martins family, including his wife, Ruda Tourinho de Assis Martins, and their four children, joined the Church in 1972.

He has served in the presidency of the Brazil Area. At the time of his calling as a General Authority, Elder Martins was president of the Brazil Fortaleza Mission. He is also a former counselor to two stake presidents and has been a bishop.

Elder Washburn, 66, was born Jan. 18, 1929, in Blanding, Utah. He graduated from BYU and the University of Utah Medical School. He practiced medicine for 28 years in Page, Ariz., doing much work among the Indian population.

As a General Authority, he has served in the Utah North Area presidency and as a counselor in the Africa Area presidency. He is former president of the Arizona Phoenix Mission, and has served as a regional representative, as a stake president and in a bishopric. He and his wife, Barbara Harries Washburn, are the parents of 10 children.

Elder Woolsey, 69, was born June 12, 1926, in Escalante, utah. He was a businessman for more than 30 years and was the founder of Woolsey Oil Inc., located first in Taft, Califl, then is Stockton Calif. He has served as preesident of the taft Chamber of Commerce and the Taft Rotary Club.

Since his calling as a General Authority, hs has served in the Pacific Area presidency, and as a member of the Philippines/Micronesia Area and North America Northeast Area presidencies. Previously, he served as president of the Arizona Tempe Mission, as a stake president and a counselor in a stake presidency. He has also seerved as a high councilor, bihop's counselor and as a stake Young Men superintendent. He and his wife, LaRae Wood Woolsey, are the parents of three children.
