Groundbreaking was held Nov. 14 in Salt Lake City for a new office building of the Deseret News, which publishes the Church News. President Thomas S. Monson and President James E. Faust, first and second counselors in the First Presidency, were among speakers. They serve as chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the newspaper's board of directors. The 380-day contract calls for demolition of the two-story existing structure at 30 E. 100 South and construction of a nine-story building in its place. Established in 1850 by President Brigham Young, the Church-owned daily newspaper will observe its sesquicentennial in the year 2000. From left are architect Bill Richardson; President Faust; President Monson; Alan W. Layton and Alan S. Layton, representing Layton Construction Co.; publisher Wm. James Mortimer, and Alison Gregerson, representing the Salt Lake City mayor's office.
