Now when our hearts were depressed, and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord comforted us, and said: Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success. - Alma 26:27.
My son, David, was serving in the Texas San Antonio Mission. While laboring in Waco, he had had much success and enjoyed the work. However, he began to lose a great deal of weight and became very ill.
His mission president transferred him to Corpus Christi, wanting him to be under the care of an LDS doctor who lived in that area.
Although David had faith and confidence in the decision of his president, he found it discouraging to be so ill and to also be among people who spoke a language that he did not know.
His illness was diagnosed as hepatitis and he was hospitalized. There was some question as to whether he would be sent home early from his mission.
One morning I arose to study the scriptures. In my reading I happened to open the Book of Mormon to the words of Ammon concerning his mission with his brothers serving among the Lamanites.
This scripture fit my son's situation so perfectly. I knew that it was a comforting message for both of us and I shared it with him. This scripture gave us both renewed comfort and faith in the work that he was doing. We both felt that all would be well.
Gratefully, his health improved, and he was able to complete his mission with the faith and assurance that the Lord was mindful of him and his afflictions.
