- The yellow glow of the organ pipes in the historic Tabernacle seemed to reflect the warm hearts of conference-goers Saturday morning Sept. 30. As Church and auxiliary leaders and others gathered for the 165th Semiannual General Conference, they greeted each other with lingering handshakes and hugs.
Then, as if on cue, strains of "We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet" began to echo throughout the building as President Gordon B. Hinckley, accompanied by his counselors in the First Presidency, President Thomas S. Monson and President James E. Faust, took their places on the rostrum. On this brisk autumn morning, President Hinckley conducted the session and offered thanks to members in Hawaii for providing a colorful arrangement of exotic flowers adorning the pulpit.
Providing music for the session was the Mormon Youth Chorus, with Robert C. Bowden directing, and Bonnie L. Goodliffe accompanying. Offering the invocation and benediction were Elders Ronald E. Poelman and F. Burton Howard of the Seventy, respectively.
