- President Gordon B. Hinckley displayed his wry wit early in the priesthood session. Announcing the changes among the Church leadership that had taken place earlier in the day, he drew laughter by saying. "I suppose I should also announce that BYU won its football game today." Later, announcing that the choir, composed of the men from the Tabernacle Choir and Mormon Youth chorus would sing "Awake, My Sons, Awake," he said, "I think we should have delayed that until the middle of my talk!"

The prelude music set the tone for the session. Two of the hymns played by organist Richard Elliott were "Abide With Me" and "Jesus Savior, Pilot Me." The talks seemed to echo that theme, an acknowledgement of the need by priesthood bearers for the Savior's guidance.

The invocation was given by Elder Earl C. Tingey of the Seventy and the benediction by Elder Ben B. Banks of the Seventy.
