Ricks College Pres. Steve Bennion announced May 31 the addition of the school's 11th varsity sport, women's fast-pitch softball, to the Vikings' athletic program.

The team will begin intercollegiate play in spring 1996 and will be coached by Larry Stocking, a former Ricks baseball player and assistant volleyball coach. Stocking teaches in the college's Health Sciences Department and has been a volleyball assistant for seven years. He has coached women's fast-pitch softball in California and currently works part-time as promotional director for the Idaho Falls Braves, a minor league baseball club in Idaho Falls.Ricks athletic director Glenn Dalling noted that while many schools are cutting men's programs to comply with Title IX requirements for equal gender funding in intercollegiate sports programs, Ricks was fortunate to be in a position to add a women's sport.

"We are very excited about the addition of the softball program," he said. "A broad base of successful athletic programs has always been our goal. The gender equity issue had to be addressed, and this was our way to face it and bring our division in line."
