Students of the gospel thronged the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium and overflow classrooms at BYU Oct. 7 for the 24th Annual Sidney B. Sperry Symposium on the Book of Mormon.

Sponsored free of charge by BYU Religious Education and the Church Educational System, the symposium each year focuses on one of the four standard works of the Church. It is named in honor of Dr. Sperry, who taught at BYU from 1932 to 1971."He truly was one of the influential pioneers in LDS religious education," noted Ellis T. Rasmussen, former dean of Religious Education at BYU, in a tribute printed in the symposium program. "Brother Sperry believed sincerely that one must learn by study and by faith as much as possible about the history, practices, principles and doctrines found in the scriptures and the history of the Church in order to teach the gospel effectively."

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve commented in his symposium talk, "It seems to me . . . that modern Book of Mormon studies began with Sidney Sperry."

Elder Holland keynoted the symposium in an hour-long address on the topic "Christ in the Book of Mormon." Portions of his and other symposium presentations are reported on this page. Others will be reported in next week's issue.

As in years past, the presentations will be published in book form, available through LDS book outlets.
